Bio

Martyn studied trumpet at the University of Wales in Cardiff under Andy Cuff, and later at The Royal College of Music, London (supported by the Sir Philip Shelbourne Award for Brass) with Paul Archibald, Andy Crowley and Mike Lovatt.

 

Whilst at the The Royal College of Music, he played principal trumpet with the The Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra for the college's 125th Anniversary concerts under John Wilson, and for the BBC3 recording of Helmut Lachenmann’s piano concerto, Ausklang, under Piere André Valade.

 

Martyn performed Richard Strauss’ Festliches Präludium at the first night of the BBC Proms 2008 with the The Royal College of Music Brass Ensemble accompanying the BBC Symphony Orchestra and was also lead trumpet of the Royal College of Music Big Band and represented the college by playing lead trumpet with the Conservatoire’s UK Big Band in 2008 as part of the International Association for Jazz Education’s (IAJE) final annual conference in Toronto, Canada.

 

London West End and touring show experiences includes: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (principal trumpet), Phantom of the Opera, Sweet Charity, The Rat Pack: Live from Las Vegas, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, The King and I, Oliver! and Mary Poppins to name but a few.

 

Further musical credits include: Chicago, Peter Pan The Musical, The Sound of MusicGuys & Dolls, The Full Monty, 42nd Street, Crazy For You, Honk, Copacabana and Fame. Theatre show credits include Judy and Liza, The Magic of Motown, The Motown Show, Roy G Hemmings' Dictionary of Soul and One Night with Elvis. Further professional playing experience includes the National Concert Orchestra of Great Britain (principal) the London Telefilmonic Orchestra (principal), the official Glenn Miller Orchestra UK, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), the Golden Section Brass Ensemble, cruise lines P&O and Royal Caribbean and even Top of the Pops!

Championship and first section Brass Band experience includes Zone One (soprano), Barrow Shipyard Band (principal), Tredegar Town (solo cornet), Parc & Dare (solo cornet), City of Cambridge Brass Band (flugel) and Waterbeach Brass (currently soprano).

​

Martyn is currently a trumpeter with the band of the Royal Air Force Regiment and has had the great pleasure of being involved with many momentous occasions in recent months including both the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and funeral as well as the coronation of King Charles where he was awarded a medal for his contributions.
