Good question! As well as having over 23 years' highly successful brass (specialising on trumpet) teaching experience, I am an experienced and qualified classroom music teacher and have a Postgraduate Certificate in Performance Teaching from
The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
As well as my teaching experience I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Performance from
The Royal College of Music in London and a wealth of professional playing experience including West End and touring shows and I am currently a trumpeter with the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment.
WHAT WILL I NEED FOR THE LESSON?
As well as your desktop / laptop / tablet / phone with preferably the Zoom App installed (rather than using Zoom through a web browser...although this works fine!), you will need your instrument, sheet music, a pencil, metronome and something to play backing tracks on should you wish (it will be impossible to play along to backing tracks generated by me!).
ARE ONLINE LESSONS AS EFFECTIVE AS IN PERSON?
In short, yes and no! Via an online lesson it is not possible for you and I to play together. Also, should you wish to play to a backing track, this is something you will need to set up at your end as you will be unable to play with a backing track played at my end due to the delay. That said, lessons have proved incredibly successful and you have the benefit of not needing to leave the comfort of your home saving you time and expense! Students are more relaxed in their own familiar environment and tend to play better as a result, plus you can warm up directly before the lesson meaning you use the lesson time as effectively as possible.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Lessons will be delivered via Zoom Video Conferencing
Although Zoom can be used through a web browser, it is recommended that you download and use the app (available for laptops / desktops, Apple and Android tablets and phones) which can be downloaded by here.
In most cases the microphone and speakers on your laptop, smartphone or tablet will suffice. You will need to ensure beforehand that these are enabled and I suggest you watch the this video (click here) to adjust the audio settings to enable original sound which makes a huge difference.
